IN THE CLUB
Curious about what's available inside the clubs in Japan? Here are the list of questions and answers relating to topics "in the club."

How much do the drinks cost?
This of course depends on which clubs/bars you are going to. In a lot of cases, the places that charge entrance fee tend to serve drinks at a decent price at around 500 yen per drink. If there is no cover charge, the venues sometimes try to make up for it by charging 800 to 1000 yen per drink. And in some cases, after you pay the innitial cover charge, you get to drink for free all night.
Do they serve food?
Most bars and some clubs will serve some kind of food, though most of the times, it's limited to microwaveable kind of food. If you want to get a bite to eat, we recommend you stop by one of the convenient stores for some onigiri or nikuman.
Is there coat check or lockers available?
Most clubs in Japan will have lockers right by the entrance. A lot of times, these lockers can be used for 200 to 300 yen. If you have lots of bags and big coat, you may have to get two lockers. Some fancier places will have coat checks, but chances are you are going to have to fold up your jacket or coat into a small locker.
Do you have to tip?
In Japan, tipping is not expected, and at times, bar tenders will chase you down to return the extra money you left behind. A lot of these bar tenders are also not allowed to accept tips, so don't force them to take it if they refuse. If there's a jar labeled tip at the counter, feel free to drop some coins, but once again, it is quite rare in Japan. In some cases, particularly in small bars and clubs, if you really enjoy their service, you can buy bartenders a drink.
Are there non-smoking clubs or bars?
A lot of bars and clubs in major US cities are turning non-smoking, but this trend is still yet to come in Japan. Some bigger restaurant style bars may have non-smoking section, but for the most part, you will have to go home with your clothes smelling like smoke.
